A green what...?

I can vividly remember the first time someone told me about drinking green smoothies. It was about 7-8 years ago, I had gone for a massage and afterwards we got into a conversation about food, being vegetarian etc. The guy then asked me if I made green smoothies?

What?

He is started to explain - I'll confess to you now that I thought he was a bit of a nutter ;-) Just because I am vegetarian doesn't make me so extreme!!! Why would I want to put spinach in a drink?

It took me 3 years before I made my first green smoothie but I can still remember that initial reaction and it makes me smile. It just supports what I truly believe - it's good to stay open to different ideas but in the end we will try things out when we are ready to. If we enjoy them, they give us pleasure and we feel good afterwards then maybe those things we try will become a regular part of our lives... maybe not!

For the last 3-4 years I having been having a green smoothie almost every day at breakfast. My recipes change with the seasons - my son or I will often think about adding something new in and until now I am never bored with them. They give me a great boost for the day.

Maybe you too are a green smoothie fan.... maybe the idea revolts you as it did for me... maybe you are just curious enough to give it a try and see what happens.

I have posted my current recipe today

Some of the yummy ingredients in here are cashew nuts (see blog), maca - a powerful root which helps boost energy and immunity plus a load of other things - check this link, spirulina - I mainly include it as a great source of B12 for a family that doesn't eat much in the way of animal products, homemade almond milk, chia seeds - great source of omega 3 and lots more, and of course some organic fruit and a bunch of spinach!

Don't forget plenty of water in there - all depends on how thick you like your smoothie but you also need your blender to be able to handle it.

A word on blenders - if you do find you like smoothies then it is good to invest in a high powered blender. I have a Vitamix and I LOVE it. I use it to make hummus, milk, smoothies and soup on a daily basis and also treats like icecream for the kids or chocolate mousse....

I have tried less strong blenders but they tend to just chop up the ingredients rather than really make a creamy smoothie.... I know which I prefer....
